Summary
This is the ultimate one-way alpine trek, crossing the Victorian Alps from Mount Beauty to Mount Hotham. Over five challenging days, you’ll cover nearly 100km with 4,200 metres of elevation gain, beginning with the ascent to Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest peak at 1,977 metres.
From the summit, the journey descends through sweeping ridgelines and highland plains toward the iconic Big River crossing. The first two days are fully remote, with long, demanding distances. By days two and three, you’ll reach the surroundings of Falls Creek, where the Pegasus 3-Day hikers join the trek, continuing together across the alpine beauty of the region.
The final two days explore the Mount Hotham area, combining challenging trails with festival-style campsites and day hikes, where participants from the shorter formats meet and share the experience. This is a trek of endurance, disconnection, and complete immersion through some of Victoria’s most spectacular alpine landscapes.

-
The day before the adventure begins, we make our way to Mount Hotham, arriving in the late afternoon. After completing registration and setting up camp, we savour our final evening meal at the local pub, a relaxed moment before immersing ourselves in the alpine wilderness for our first night under the stars.
-
An early morning shuttle takes us to the starting point of our adventure. From here, we begin our first hike, ascending to the summit of Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest peak. The day concludes at Cleve Cove Hut, where we enjoy an intimate night beneath a sky full of stars.
-
Today we tackle our longest and most challenging day. The journey begins with a downhill stretch to the Big River crossing, before climbing back through alpine trails past Ropers Hut. We finish at Falls Creek, camping at Wallace Hut for an evening of connection and rest.
-
We cover another long distance as we traverse Mount Cope and wind around Mount Bundara and Mount Jim before descending to the historic Blair’s Hut for our evening gathering. This night is shared with hikers from the Pegasus format, offering a chance to connect and celebrate together.
-
The adventure continues uphill through Dibbins Hut to Mt Loch and then towards Silver Brumby Hut in Hotham for one epic final night and a gathering at the camp. This night will be shared with the Orion and Pegasus highlanders.
-
The final day is the last push, though the shortest and easiest of the trek, as all Highlanders reunite at Wire Plain for the finish. We then depart for Melbourne, stopping along the way to share a well-deserved celebratory dinner and reflect on the Hike Tribe adventure.

Your Questions, Answered
Everything you need to know before hitting the trail! From what to bring to booking details, we've got you covered. Explore the essentials for your next guided hiking adventure.

This program isn’t suitable for complete beginners. A minimum hiking experience, or being active with a minimum of fitness is required. However, if you’re new to multi-day hiking, this is the perfect opportunity for you to get prepared and to take on the challenge in a fully organised event.
If you are a complete beginner, I invite you to join our weekend Day Hikes first and build your fitness slowly.
By joining my HikeFit Prep Program we will help you acquire the physical fitness and the skills to accomplish your your multi-day hiking adventure.
Attending the event as part of Hike Tribe team, you’ll have access to our guidance and support throughout the entire event. That said, this is still your adventure—you’ll be responsible for carrying your own pack with gear and preparing accordingly for the journey.
Our team will be here to help, but the effort and training will be up to you!
-
Yes, you do! While this is a fully organised event, it is still a multi-day hike, so you’ll need to carry your overnight gear, including a tent, mattress, sleeping bag, change of clothes, cooking utensils… etc.
However, as you will be attending as a part of Hike Tribe team, we will be able to share some of the load by sharing equipment.
Also, unlike solo adventures, food will be provided, so you’ll only need to carry one lunch meal. Water and food will also be available at all checkpoints.
But don’t worry, you have 2 month to prepare, and we’ll help you get any gear you’re missing through renting, borrowing, or sharing with other Hike Tribe team members.
-
Food during training is not provided except snacks.
Food & snacks during event will be provided. However, feel free to bring your own snacks especially if you have specific dietary.
-
Yes, transport is included for both the Training Day Hikes and the final event, so you can relax and recover without having to drive after long, demanding days.
Sharing the journey together also adds to the fun and helps strengthen the team bond!
-
Yes and no – you do need to prepare yourself and get the right gear for this event, especially because it can get really cold in the mountain. The cost depends on the gear you already own and whether you need to acquire additional items. It varies based on the brand, quality, and whether you buy new, second-hand, or rent. We see it as a worthwhile investment, marking the start of your hiking journey! We highly recommend getting your own hiking shoes, and you can always borrow other gear if needed. We will provide you with a checklist of must-have and optional gear to ensure you’re well-prepared. If you want to purchase equipment, we recommend ONE PLANET’s Camplist ( Link here). ONE PLANET is an Australian owned maker of quality outdoor gear that’s well priced and built to last. That’s good for the planet! Or you can alternatively go to Bogong Equipment and you will get 10% discount if you part of Hike Tribe’s team. We will eventually discuss gear hire etc.
-
Check our T&C for our HikeFit Prep Program.
In regards to the final event, please refer to Highlander’s Cancellation Policy on their website.
-
Partaking in an outdoor activity involves few risks due to the nature of the activity. Our guides have their first aid training in the wilderness.
Training is essential and getting yourself physically prepared will minimise risks of injuries. Additionally, the event will provide first aid trainers and medics. We still highly encourage participants to get an ambulance cover in case of any issues.
-
Toilet facilities along the trail differ by location. However you will likely need to use a “bush toilet,” as we call it. To support environmental preservation, you can carry a trowel, toilet paper and waste bags. Please ensure all rubbish is properly disposed of, leaving no trace behind.
-
Kids are not allowed as part of HikeFit Preparation Program.
-
We also apply our own grading system to help you choose a hike that suits your experience and fitness:
Beginner: Ideal for those new to hiking, featuring gentle hills and uneven terrain. These hikes average 2.5 hours with minimal ascents (under 300m).
Intermediate: Designed for those with some hiking experience, offering moderate challenges. These hikes average 3.5 hours with a total ascent around 450m.
Advanced: Perfect for confident hikers seeking rewarding day hike adventures. These hikes average 5 hours with up to 750m of total ascent.
Expert: For those eager to push their boundaries, these challenging hikes range from 6 to 8 hours, with an average ascent of 1000m.
Important Note: Our internal levels do not always align directly with the Australian Grading System. For example, a Grade 3 hike may be listed as Advanced due to its length, or a Grade 4 hike may be marked as Intermediate if the challenging section is brief.
You can find the Hike Level Grading on our hikes calendar. If you’re unsure about your fitness level or need assistance selecting a hike, feel free to contact our team, we’re happy to help!
